Dance Mom Help! Why we do this.

Our family (well when I say “our family” I really do mean me) fell into this world of dance when my then 11-year-old daughter decided to try some musical theatre classes. Don’t get me wrong my husband is a very supportive dance dad, who comes to watch her dances, encourages her to keep at it, and is generally an all round good sport when it comes to sparkle and costumes, but as with most things in our family unit the organisation falls to me.

Our daughter had dabbled in dance before—a bit of hip hop at school, a term of Bollywood dancing (so much fun), and a short stint with jazz at a neighbourhood dance class. But it wasn’t until she discovered musical theatre at a local performing arts and dance school that everything changed.

Suddenly, we were swept into a whirlwind of

• 10-15 hours a week of classes
• company dancer status
• productions
• full length musicals
• local and national team competitions
• private lessons
• and finally solo competition performances

It was a whole new world, and at times very strange one to me. It was one I never even knew existed, and certainly one I had no experience in. I am the most non-dance-mom of all dance moms that ever did exist.  At times I found it very overwhelming.

I felt like an imposter mom. I didn’t know the terminology, the expectations of a dancer, or even the types of shoes my daughter needed (it turned out a lot! Ballet shoes, jazz shoes, half shoes, tap shoes …..) I was lucky enough to meet some wonderful other mom’s who held my hand and guided me through the  daunting journey. Not the stereotypical dance moms we see on TV but real down to earth moms.

Now, I’m here to hold your hand, just in case you don’t have a group of friendly moms like I did to lean on as you navigate this new and stressful, but exciting and rewarding path.
